Empowering Women in Sports and Media Through Technology

Written by Stacy Peled 10/11/2024October 15th, 2024

As a former semi-professional soccer player, my love for sports runs deep. There’s something uniquely powerful about the world of sports—its ability to inspire, unite, and break barriers. This passion has followed me into my career in media and technology, where I’ve seen firsthand the intersection of innovation, sports, and the drive to empower women in the industry. It’s this very synergy that has shaped my journey at AnyClip, and recently, our success at the US Open was a prime example of what happens when these worlds come together. This year’s US Open was more than just another tournament; it was a showcase of innovation in sports media.

New Opportunities for Content Discovery and Engagement

AnyClip’s video technology powered key aspects of the tournament—streaming, playbacks, and the creation of a smart video hub that offered fans a richer, more personalized content experience. As we look back at the impact this technology had, I can’t help but draw parallels to the recent Brand Genius award highlighting Alexis Ohanian’s dedication to women in sports.

Ohanian’s commitment to supporting women’s sports has been a beacon of change in an industry that has historically underserved female athletes. As someone who has spent years on the pitch and now on the frontlines of media, I know how much representation matters. Women in sports deserve the same level of visibility and support, not just from fans but from brands and media platforms alike. Ohanian’s work isn’t just about pushing women’s sports forward—it’s about reshaping the narrative around who gets to be seen and celebrated.

At AnyClip, we’ve taken this ethos to heart. The technology we provided to the US Open didn’t just enhance the viewer experience—it created new opportunities for content discoverability, engagement, and storytelling. Our smart video hub allowed fans to immerse themselves in the game, with highlights and playbacks personalized to their interests. This level of content customization makes not only the entire tournament accessible and interactive, but also the archival footage. What better way to elevate not just known tennis stars, but those who are up and coming than granting access to all their content?  And beyond tennis, this kind of technology is critical in amplifying the stories of women in sports, where coverage often falls short.

The Future of Storytelling: Innovation and Personalization

AnyClip video technology is predicated on creating more engaging, personalized, smarter video experiences. Leveraging AI, AnyClip streamlines the tedious video processes like tagging, content organization, descriptions, and closed captions, and then uses that information to respond to consumers’ content needs. The US Open, in its 2nd year of partnership with AnyClip, leveraged hallmark features of the Genius Platform to create a robust web and mobile video experience.

Smart Video Hub

With content production higher than ever, the ability to manage content at scale has become problematic. AnyClip’s next-gen video portal uses AI to replace the manual and time-consuming work of content management and publishing. Utilizing thematic playlists and content tags,  real-time content, like post-match highlights or press conferences, was published within 1 hour of air time.

AnyClip’s smart content management system removed lag time in the content workflow, giving access to fans quicker than ever before.

Sports and Media

In-Video Search

Search is evolving—offering more than just information, but immersive experiences. AnyClip’s AI-powered search function did just that for tennis enthusiasts. Fans could easily search for keywords, athletes, brands, and specific moments, ensuring they never miss a second of the action. This powerful tool doesn’t just provide instant access to live highlights – it also opens up an extensive video archive, giving super fans a deeper dive into the tournament’s history.

AnyClip’s innovative video search function transformed how fans engage with content, making every moment accessible, searchable, and unforgettable.

Video Is the Game-Changer

The relationship between media and sports is evolving, and women’s sports are at the forefront of that change. As we’ve seen with initiatives like the NWSL and growing interest in women’s soccer globally, there’s a huge appetite for content that uplifts female athletes. Brands are starting to recognize the value here, but there’s still much work to be done in making sure women’s sports get the media attention they deserve. Video technology can be a game-changer—quite literally—in how these stories are told.

For me, this is personal. I know the thrill of stepping onto a field, and I also know the frustrations that come with the lack of support and visibility for women athletes. That’s why I’m proud to be part of an industry and a company that can play a role in shifting this landscape. With AnyClip’s AI-powered video solutions, we’re not only helping broadcasters and publishers drive engagement and monetization but also supporting efforts to give women in sports the platform they deserve.

Looking Toward the Future

As we look toward the future, my hope is that more brands, media companies, and tech innovators follow in the footsteps of leaders like Ohanian. The power to change the narrative around women in sports is in our hands, and with the right technology and commitment, we can ensure that women athletes get the recognition, coverage, and respect they’ve long deserved.

The success of the US Open has shown what’s possible when sports and media collide in the right way. Now, it’s time to make sure that same attention and innovation are applied to uplifting women across all sports. After all, the future of sports is as much about who plays as it is about how we tell their stories.
